If there is well a dress that we see everywhere this summer is the smocked dress. Long, light, comfortable and perfect for facing the heat, it can be used on vacation as well as in the city.
And the good news is that you don't need a sewing pattern to make it!
Today I show you how to sew a smocked dress without a pattern, simply from one of your tank tops. An accessible project, quick to complete and ideal for creating a unique dress, perfectly adapted to your body shape.

The necessary equipment
To make this smocked dress, you will need:
- a tank top in your size
- a non-stretch fabric (cotton or linen ideally)
- classic yarn
- of elastic thread for smocks
- a sewing machine
- a serger (optional, but recommended for nice finishes)
For my part, I chose a dyed woven cotton coupon. It is a material that provides a nice drape while remaining pleasant to wear during hot weather.
How to trace a dress without a pattern from a tank top?
The trick of this tutorial is to use a tank top as a base to create your dress.
Start by folding your fabric in half. Also fold your tank top in half, then lay it on the fabric edge to edge.
Then measure the width of the bottom of the tank top and multiply this measurement by 1.5. This value will correspond to the width of your dress.
Trace this width onto the fabric, then place your tank top at the end of this marker. You can then draw or cut out the sides as well as the armholes directly.
Finish by drawing a slight rounding for the neckline, then cut.

Easily adapt the length of your dress
The advantage of this method is that it is completely customizable.
Are you dreaming of a short dress for the holidays? A midi dress to wear every day? Or a long dress for summer evenings?
All you need is to add the desired length under your tank top.
For my part, I added 80 cm to obtain a long dress and I measure 1m70.
Once the length is validated, draw a very slightly flared skirt andthen cut out this first piece, then use it as a template to cut out the second.
✨ Little tip from the Couponettes: use one of your skirts or dresses to trace the correct skirt length.
Finish the neckline and armholes
Before assembling your dress, start by preparing the finishing touches.
Overlock the armholes and the neckline.
Then fold each edge over about 0.5 cm towards the inside, mark the folds with an iron, then stitch with a straight stitch.
This step allows you to obtain clean and durable finishes.
How to make the smocks?
The smocks bring all the charm to this dress.
Start by filling out four cans of elastic thread, by hand or with your machine.
Then sew a first line near the neckline, then a second about 0.5 cm from the first.
Then continue with a line 3 cm from the previous one, then a new line 0.5 cm away. Repeat this pattern up to where you want the skirt to begin.
You can stop at the waist or go down to the hips depending on the desired look.

Assemble the dress
Once the smocking is finished, overlock all four sides of your dress.
Then assemble both pieces right sides together by sewing the shoulders then the sides. Flatten your seam allowances with an iron.
If you want to add a slot, lleave approximately 30 cm unsewn at the bottom of the dress before making the hems. Don't forget the breakpoint.
This little finish brings more ease and gives a nice movement to the dress.
For the hem with slit, make it in just one seam, starting from the top of one of the slits then the front, again the slit and finally the back.
Your patternless smocked dress is already finished!
